The Fishermen of the Malacca Strait

Little Amir and his kind family lived in a cozy house on a beautiful island, right in a very special place called the Malacca Strait in Indonesia. His brave daddy was a wonderful fisherman, which meant he spent his days catching yummy fish from the big, blue sea.

One sunny afternoon, when the sky was bright and clear, Amir felt super excited because he got to go fishing with his strong daddy! In their happy fishing village, it was a very special tradition for all the boys to help their fathers catch lots of fish from the sparkling ocean.

Amir was very good at helping his daddy! He skillfully helped his father row their little fishing boat across the calm waves. Soon, they reached their favorite secret spot in the big sea, where they usually found many, many fish swimming around.

They waited and waited, almost for a whole hour, but oh dear! They hadn't caught even one wiggly fish. So, Amir’s daddy decided it was time to try a different, lucky fishing spot. He kindly asked Amir to pull up the heavy anchor from the bottom of the sea.

Little Amir tried his very best to lift the heavy anchor, but it felt super stuck! It seemed to be caught on a big, hard rock deep down under the water. So, brave Amir quickly jumped right into the cool, blue sea and swam down like a little fish to free the anchor that was trapped.

As Amir swam deeper and deeper, he saw something very surprising! The anchor wasn't just stuck on a rock. It was actually hooked onto a very old, rusty metal box! And all around this old box, there were so many shiny, sparkly objects glistening in the underwater light. What an amazing sight!

After carefully wiggling the anchor free from the old metal box, Amir looked around. He gently picked up some beautiful, shiny things that looked like old plates and cups, right near where the box had been resting. He then swam back up to his father, holding his special findings very carefully in his hands.

The very next day, Amir and his honest father brought all the valuable, old items to their kind Village Chief. The Village Chief was absolutely delighted and so happy about this amazing discovery! He was also very impressed by how honest the fishermen were for sharing their find. Soon, news about the wonderful antique treasures found deep underwater spread quickly all over the island, making everyone excited.

Just one week later, with the help of brave navy sailors, the government was able to find and bring up all the other valuable treasures from the bottom of the sea. They followed Amir’s excellent directions to the spot where he found the first shiny things. People whispered that this incredible treasure had come from a big Chinese ship that sank in the Malacca Strait many, many years ago, even centuries ago!

The whole country was so proud and happy! They gave Amir’s honest father a very special award for being so good and giving all the found treasures to the government. And because Amir was such a smart and honest boy, the country also gave him a wonderful gift: a scholarship! This meant Amir could go to school all the way up to university. Now, Amir has a big dream to become a super smart marine expert, studying the amazing ocean and all its secrets.
